AMC – Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita

AMC (Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita) is a group of congenital conditions in which multiple joints are restricted in movement or stiffened from birth. The cause is usually insufficient fetal movement in the womb, which prevents muscles and joints from developing normally.

Typical features affect joints, muscles, and posture.

  • Restricted joint mobility: Multiple joints are limited in movement or completely stiffened from birth.
  • Muscle shortening or weakness: The affected muscles are shortened or too weak to allow normal movement.
  • Abnormal joint positions: Arms and legs show characteristic misalignments that define the clinical picture.

Cognitive development is not affected in most cases. Many children are highly motivated and quick to learn.

Orthopedic Care for AMC

Individually adapted orthopedic care is a central part of treatment and daily support for AMC.

  • Maintaining and improving mobility: Orthoses and aids specifically support existing joint mobility and promote its further development.
  • Stabilizing joints: Targeted care secures unstable joints and prevents further misalignment.
  • Facilitating everyday functions: Gripping, standing, and walking are noticeably supported through precisely fitted aids.
